What Our Students Say
“I was working full-time and applying to GEM for the second time. Tom and Miriam helped me structure my application, prep for the GAMSAT, and absolutely smash my interviews. I got offers from both of my top-choice unis.”
– Francis, successful GEM applicant (2024 entry)
"I tried to get into medical school four times previously, and only when I invested in Tom and Miriam I understood where I had been going wrong all these years. Now, I have two offers from medical school."

🔍 Graduate Entry Medicine FAQs
Your questions about GEM answered by doctors who have been through it themselves.
-
Do I need to have a science degree to apply to GEM?Not always. Some GEM courses prefer or require a science degree, but others may accept non-science degrees as long as you meet their entry requirements. Some may require A-level Biology or Chemistry instead.
-
What if I’ve applied before and didn’t get in?Reapplying to GEM is common — and many students succeed on their second or third attempt. In our sessions, we help reapplicants identify what went wrong (e.g. school choice, interview performance, weak personal statement) and rebuild a stronger application.
-
How competitive is GEM compared to undergraduate medicine?GEM is often more competitive, with far fewer places and higher applicant-to-offer ratios. Some GEM courses accept fewer than 40 students per year — and may receive over 1,000 applications. A strong UCAT/GAMSAT score, a focused personal statement, and a strategic school choice are essential.
-
What’s the difference between UCAT and GAMSAT?UCAT is a fast-paced, skills-based exam GAMSAT is a much longer, knowledge-based exam testing science, reasoning, and written communication If you’re unsure which test suits you best, we help students assess both and build a prep timeline accordingly.
-
How do I write a personal statement for Graduate Entry Medicine?A strong GEM personal statement should focus on: Why you’re pursuing medicine as a graduate or career changer What experiences have given you insight into the profession What you’ve gained from patient contact, ethical dilemmas, or teamwork How your degree and skills transfer to a medical career We offer 1:1 personal statement coaching specifically for graduate-entry applicants — tailored to your background, tone, and goals.
-
Can I apply to both undergraduate and graduate entry medicine in the same cycle?Yes — you can mix and match undergraduate and graduate-entry medical courses on your UCAS application, and many people do. Just be aware: Some schools will expect a different focus in your personal statement You’ll need to meet both sets of criteria (e.g. A-levels AND degree) Interviews may ask why you’re applying to both routes We help students create a balanced application strategy that fits both pathways.
-
Which GEM courses should I apply to?That depends on: Your degree background Whether you've taken UCAT or GAMSAT Your academic history (A-levels, degree class, etc.) Whether you're a UK or international applicant We guide you through school selection in our GEM strategy sessions so you don’t waste a choice on a course you're unlikely to get into.
-
Can international students apply for Graduate Entry Medicine in the UK?Yes, but options are limited. Most GEM courses are primarily for UK and EU applicants due to funding and NHS placement restrictions. Some universities may accept international graduates, but it’s important to check entry requirements and tuition fees directly. We can help international students identify viable options and prepare strong applications.
-
Can you help if I’m working full time?Absolutely. Many of our students are juggling full-time jobs, family responsibilities, or other degrees. Our tutoring is flexible, online, and tailored to your availability. You’ll get a realistic plan that fits your life — not the other way around.
-
What is Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM)?GEM is a 4-year accelerated medical degree for students who already hold an undergraduate degree. It's designed for graduates from both science and non-science backgrounds who want to train as doctors.
-
Do I need healthcare experience to apply for GEM?Most of the time, relevant healthcare or patient-facing experience will add a lot to your application. This could be through: Paid work (e.g. HCA, support worker) Volunteering in care homes, hospices, or clinics Shadowing GPs or hospital doctors Mental health or social care roles More is expected of graduate applicants than undergraduates - you have to show what you have done beyond your degree to make you stand out. We help you reflect on your experiences to show maturity, insight, and suitability for medicine — even if your background isn’t clinical.
-
What admissions tests do I need for GEM?It depends on the medical school: Many require the UCAT (e.g. Warwick, SGUL, Newcastle) Some require the GAMSAT (e.g. Swansea, Plymouth, Nottingham GEM) Our strategy sessions help you choose the right pathway for your background and strengths.
